Almost 280 Democrats attended the 2008 LCDC Awards banquet at Lancaster Host Resort & Conference Center last evening, the largest such banquet in the county Democrats' history.

Lancaster County Democrats met to honor two of its own. Luis Rodriguez, who was the Party's endorsed candidate for County Sheriff in 2007, was named Democrat of the Year for his tireless campaign. Luis earned the respect of county Dems, Independents and Republicans for the quality of his message and his relentless door to door campaigning.

Nelson Polite, Sr. received the LCDC Lifetime Achievement Award for his long time activism in the Party and in the community. Nelson, 84 years young, is currently serving his fourth term on Lancaster City Council.

The County Party had invited both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to the banquet but neither could attend, since the Senate was in session yesterday.

Don Cunningham, Lehigh County's administrative executive and former mayor of Bethlehem, represented the Clinton Campaign and said, "This campaign is a clear choice, we believe, between talk and action. We need leadership we can count on."

Former U.S. Sen. Harris Wofford, who served in the Kennedy and Gov. Casey administrations, is an Obama supporter who campaigns for the Senator often. He called a potential Clinton presidency a "roll of the dice" and compared Obama to the Kennedys. He said, "I've been waiting a long time for someone who makes me think  in the way we needed Robert Kennedy and John Kennedy for president."

Cunningham's and Wofford's remarks played to a divided audience. Both Obama and Clinton supporters were out in force at the banquet. But many county Democrats are still undecided. Pennsylvania, the next big state to play a role in the eventual nomination, will hold its primary April 22.

When asked if the split of loyalties between the two presidential candidates is hurting the County Party, Bruce Beardsley, LCDC chairman said, "Absolutely not. We, like the rest of the state, are registering new Democrats at rates that we have never seen before. Activism is up, volunteerism is up, and huge numbers of people are motivated like I have never seen before."

"When it is all said and done, and we the people have nominated a candidate, Democrats will unite behind a candidate to end this illegitimate war, end budget deficits, work towards universal health care, and restore the middle class," said Beardsley.

Lois Herr, LCDC Executive Director said, "The LCDC is neutral in the presidential campaign. Our job is to provide resources, communications, venues for the local Obama and Clinton groups. We are in contact with both the Clinton and Obama state-wide campaigns on a daily basis and we will help both of those campaigns organize on a county level."
