Where were the Republicans?
Republicans
hold a 1.8 to 1 voter registration lead in Lancaster County. But on
Tuesday, primary election day, they polled only 42,121 votes for
President for a turnout of 24.4%, while 49, 836 Dem voted for
President for a turnout of 53.2%.
Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have
motivated Democrats, Republicans and Independent voters in every state
that has held a primary to get out, register and vote. In almost every
state, the Democratic turnout has out paced Republican turnout by 2 to
1 and 3 to 1.
In
Lancaster County, the Democrats have added almost 12,000 new voters to
the Democratic roll. Many are new voters, but a good portion were
Independents and Republicans who have switched parties. The Republican
Party won't easily win them back without major changes in policy.
Changes which will bring them in line with the values Democrats have
always held; family, community, and a shot at the American Dream.
The county and state Republican parties
are planning to recoup their losses by contacting Republicans who have
left and signed up with the Democrats. Dave Dumeyer, chair of the
Lancaster County Republican Party, indicated today in the
Intelligencer Journal that "GOP overtures likely will paint Democrats
as intent on raising taxes to pay for health care, subprime mortgage
bailouts and alternative energy development."
Republican leadership needs to be
reminded who is responsible for the health care crisis, the mortgage
crisis and the lack of alternative energy development. It is Dumeyer's
party and the moneyed-elite that he represents who have fallen into
the habit of spending beyond the country's means and borrowing against
our children's future.
The Republican "borrow and spend" habit
has driven up interest rates and constricted the money available for
mortgages to many Americans. Republicans like Joe Pitts have voted
against health care reform in lock step with the health insurance
industry and driven millions of Americans out of their coverage. And
what does Mr. Dumeyer not understand about the price of a gallon of
gasoline. If the Bush administration had tackled clean and green
energy initiatives seven years ago, we would not be paying $3.59 per
gallon now.
Republican converts do not have to fear
"tax and spend" Democrats. They need to be afraid of the Republican
party leadership whose values do not match the values of our friends
and neighbors who are Republicans.
And to those friends and neighbors who
are Republican, it is time to join with the Democrats and get about
the business of solving our county's and nation's problems
